I have a male Japanese Fighting fish, called him Bob!

I know this may have been done before but I'd need a slighty different answer.

I know they are moody fish and they will also kill a female if she is not ready for breeding. They are known to kill other males also, however, placing them with other fish that are not in their family may work, you know those small blue tropical tiny fish?

Any how, I'd like to place him with other fish but what ones and would it be a good idea or would I end up with a serial killing fish?

Thanks!

From what I know, Betta's make good community fish. They get along with most fish that are easy going, and don't nip at their fins. They don't however, get along with angelfish, gouramis, or fancy guppies. It think that has to do with confusing them with other male betta's. Some fin nippers include barbs, and tetras. I don't think neon tetras (If thats what you meant) would be good, they tend to nip fins. Females would be fine with almost all other fish, and other female betta's, they're more docile and don't have the flashy fins...but, seeing as Bob's a male...hehe A good fish to try, would be a catfish. Hopefully that'll help you!

I'm scared if i get those little tiny electric blue type fish, bob will eat them! Even walking by his tank, he flares his gill thingys up and takes a battle position. I don't think any of my animals are sane!

Thank you though!

you can put bettas with other fish but nothing that will fit into his mouth. keep in mind he is a preditory fish and will eat smaller then he.

your best bet would be mollies or platies. and you can put all 3 together. mollies, platies and bettas usually get along great.

Many other fish will require filtration or heating.
Aeration can be a concern too.
The solution is a simple air powered sponge filter.
The round one with the weighted base seem the best.
ONLY EVER CLEAN THE FILTER SPONGE IN A BUCKET OF WATER DRAWN FROM THE AQUARIUM.
these filters are cheap, don't make too much current and have no moving parts to break. I would suggest however investing in a quiet airpump as that is a common place that leads to frustration.
With the choice of fish, neon tetra can work well, although as mentioned they can become dinner or nip fins.
Not enuf to worry tho! as a test be sure to get cheap neon tetra, not expensive cardinals.
Not as flashy but better suited would be white cloud minnows.
Avoid tetra with a 'barb' like shape, things like black widows, serpea, columbians etc will destroy betta fins.
On the other hand betta will often fight small sailfin mollies and large male guppys.....
Fish I think are best suited
cory catfish to scavenge left over food.
Bristlenose catfish to eat algae (may need the odd bit of cucumber when algae is gone)
I also rate Australian riffle shrimp. The striata were a standout for me. Hard to come by but very cool.
I had a nice tank of plakat short fins and the livebearer mini gars..... strange one.
Platys are a very good choice...... some mollys just really get huge and need that space. Some of mine are really quite big fish.

Such a very good question Beth, I've wondered about that myself, but recieved my answer already. Since I have the Pink Kissing Gouramis, goldfish, Irridesent shark, Bala shark, algae dudes, tetras, and a guppy. Needless to say, the Japanese fighting fish would not get along with my fish. It's good that I learned this advice before learning the hard way though.
Thanks guys!
