Did anyone attend that municipal meeting where over 40 dog owners spoke about the new leashing laws in Vancouver. Anyone know what the outcome of that meeting was? I'm curious. Are we going to be fined $250 if we're caught with our dog's offleash now?

Yeah, it got really catty. I don't know if you'll be fined, but say, is it true your dog might need a safety seat in the car soon? I heard that they actually aren't safer than seatbelts! Who woulda thunk?

In Australia pit bulls are a restricted breed. In Sydney (I dont know about other areas) you are not permitted to walk them un muzzled. If they happen to bite someone, regardless how bad the bite is then it's a $55,000 fine. They must also be desexed and registered on the dangerous breed register.

I am sorry to say that that is stupid! Any dog can walk up to you and bite you, what difference does it make if its a pitbull? That is one of the weirdest laws I have ever heard!

Well the majority of serious dog attacks here are by American Pitbulls, hence the over reaction. But if people are doing the correct thing and muzzling their dog then it wont ever be an issue.

Animals are not the guilty ones the owners are. You make your dog what they are.

Actually, there is a two-fold problem with pit-bulls: one is genetic and the other is ownership. They are a dog that was bred to fight to the bitter end, pure and simple. Once a pit bull starts an attack it is impossible to stop it - they have a single-mindedness of purpose that is phenomenal. Secondly, the vast majority of people who get those types of dog do so for the 'mean macho' image and are not exemplary owners of any breed! Personally, I am most in favour of 'dangerous dog' bylaws that apply to any dog (and its owner!) and applies to aggressive behaviour towards both animals and humans.

Actually in talking to some pitbull owners here there was a new law introduced last year where pitbulls are not permitted to breed. They must be de-sexed by 6 months of age. Anyone found breeding them will be severely fined. They are trying to eradicate the breed out of australia.

Why? they are an introduced animal, they arent native here. Owners cant control them. Further imports are banned and those here are not permitted to breed. So they are not going around putting them down... so why is it horrible?

There are plenty of pitbulls that aren't vicious. Thank God that they haven't brought this stupidity to the US! This is just my opinion. The owners of these dogs that train them to attack are just as guilty.
