i am thinking of getting one cause i love frogs! we have tree frogs in our yard and they are so cute! i generally come across them while out in nature and just end up taking a picture of them home. I could give one a good home but was wondering i f any members had some frog or other exotic stories to share? also need some advice as far as proper set up if you have it! housing etc.

Frogs are cool. I used to collect them when I was young and sell them to friends. We used to run a tadpole club within the neighbourhood, kinda lame but as kids it was awesome. Frogs are relatively easy to keep especially if they are indigenous to the area you live in.

We used to have a three legged pixie frog, Mrs. Green. She was very cool. She sadly passed away. :(

Your file is probably too large. Upload resized photos from your computer to a sharing site such as Photobucket (or your own website) and then give the image address to the Images link below. Clear as mud? Petmail me and I'll try to explain better. Or: If you see me online, maybe IM me and I'll walk you through it!

Check with your state laws about keeping native species. Here in BC, it's illegal to keep our native species of anything as pets without a permit. I have a White's Tree Frog, they are amazing frogs. They always look like they're smiling. Most frogs aren't too difficult to keep as long as you have the proper set up for the species. Never give them tap water, frogs can absorb the chlorine through their skin.

Let's hope it wasn't a bullfrog! It was probably a red-legged frog or similar species of native British Columbian frog. Bullfrogs are an introduced predatory species and thus far have not made it out of southern (Lower Mainland and lower Vancouver Island) British Columbia. They are eating all the native frogs in the areas that they are colonizing! If any of you see bullfrogs being sold as pets in stores or by individuals, please don't buy them and inform your local wildlife conservation office! BC has very strict rules about the ownership of native species - even frogs and other reptiles and amphibians. You are encouraged, however, to make your garden frog-friendly and give them a little bit of habitat there....

But you can lure them to your backyard garden by making it frog-friendly! Because so much of their natural habitat is disappearing, that is one way you can help them - and be able to see them more often... To heck with koi ponds - make yours a frog pond!

I cant believe this was started back last year and I am now just finally getting a frog!! I waited months to search for a rescue frog and have had no luck!! I did however find a guy who needs to rehome his and I am getting it tomm. It is so exciting!! His name is froggy (we will change that ) and he is a whites tree frog! I am going frog shopping also to get him house warming gifts as I fear he lacks some cage creativity!! He also lacks a cage thermometer and some neccessities so maybe this will be a rescue after all...as I dont see how this person is knowing or regulating his cage temp. with no means to do so!! Anyhow will post more and some pics tomm. Anyone with thoughts or info. regarding my new addition feel free to post as I did some extensive reasearch on keeping him happy and healthy but am always eager to hear hands on advice or thoughts! Also a name change idea ~ anything but kermit...thanks!

Congrats on your new addition Tina, you'll love him. Live plants will help keep the humidity up and mine love a big water dish, I can here them splashing in it at night. Post a picture when you get him settled, would love to see him.

I used to have 2 pet frogs... well, firebellied toads. A male and female. They were really cute. When we got the female from the pet store, she was underfed and too weak to catch her own food. So we had to mimick a jumping cricket on a string to get her to make an attempt to eat. The cricket was dead of course, so, when she'd "catch" it, we'd let it slip out of the string so she could swallow it. The male used to try to mate and hold her under water for long periods of time. It drove me nuts because it always looked like he was trying to drown her as she struggled. I would always pull them apart. The only thing that was a real pain about them was the male before we got the female. He had a unique ability to find his way out of the tank we had him in. Not sure how, we put weights on the top but he was surprizingly strong and agile. Inevitably, he would end up under the fridge. Trying to catch a firebellied toad under the fridge takes time and effort you need to make even if it makes you late for work... Yeah, real pain. We eventually moved and found friends that had a really nice pond in their back yard. We decided they'd be happy in the pond and allowed our friends to take them. They were comfortable enough to mate in the pond and developed a family. Our friends began hearing the collective chirping of firebellied toads in their pond. Not sure if it continues today, this was around 10 years ago. Good Luck with Your New Tomm!

Eval~ Is there a way to possibly keep the humidity a bit lower?? I have no plants yet in there and it is a screen top and yet the humidity reads like 65! I am getting his tank heater applied in a bit but am kinda worried it will make it rise more!! All I have read and learned say for this frog 50-60 on hum. is best! I even bought a new gauge for checking the humidity as I thought the other was broke!! The temp however is at 75 which I know needs to be higher so I am a bit worried~ can it be too humid when I add the heater ? Does anything keep humidity down like misting or is that not enough? I feel really stupid and I need a more specific book on only whites cause the others are so vague and talk about all kinds of tree frogs!! He looks fine but I am so worried I wont make his new home perfect for him! The guy I got him from had only a heat light on him and no gauge for humidity in the tank!!! when I picked him up though the bulb burned out! Right now he only has a 15 watt day light on but my house is like 75 degrees to keep him warm til i get his heater right! Am I just overly concerned??

Hey Tina, your humidity is fine. I use a heat lamp, not a pad. I find the lamp keeps it warmer, if your bulb burned out just replace it with a regular household bulb. You can play with the temperature by changing the wattage. The heat bulb will also lower the humidity a bit, you'll notice that it gets more humid after the light goes out at night. What are the dimensions of the tank he is in? Depending on the hight you can probably get away with a 60w bulb. There is nothing wrong with overly concerned
