yes, they are hard work mainly because they don`t like to be handled. only one of mine likes it, and not for that long. I think the leopard gecko is so sweet, your right about that. my favorite is the chinese water dragon by far....they are clean, personable awesome pets

HEY!! I don't have any reptiles, but I really want a bearded dragon. I've always been really interested in them. I also would like a snake, but my fiance isn't too keen on that idea. LOL What do you guys think... I as SERIOUSLY thinking about getting my first lizzard this summer. What is a good one for a newbie? I don't wanna jusp in too deep on the first (if I DO decide to finally get one) and get something I can't handle. SUGGESTIONS?

You need to consider the space you have as well as time. A Bearded Dragon will need a very large enclosure, at least 55 gallon when full grown. It also needs a heat lamp and UVB lamp, salad (special) and crickets daily. A Leopard Gecko can live in a 20 gallon for life, heat lamp, crickets every other day. Crested Geckos are cool too, they need a taller habitat but not huge, a few crickets daily and fruit puree with Crested Gecko Diet mixed in. Any of these are great pets if they're given the proper diet and other requirements. Info is in a nutshell, there's lots more to it.

I agree, I mean if you ask me, I would say yes the leopard gecko for the space, the chinese water dragon is very low maintenance as well, plus they are personable. They usually defacate in thier water dish so its easy clean, crickets are easily accessable, they love motts fruit cups and veggies and you can access lots of information for them. Neither one of them smells, I use screen reptarium cages for my water dragons so they don`t get snout damage trying to get out. They love to be handled and are wonderful pets. so, either one of these. The lighting is simple.Do not get an iguana for a first time lizard.

Chinese Water Dragons aren't low maintenance, their care is similar to an Iguana, they just don't get quite as big. I don't mean to argue with you, I just don't want people to think they are easy and run out and buy one. That's how they end up in rescue.

My son has a water dragon, and is always cleaning up after it. Because it does poop in the water dish there is a lot of cleaning to do - his likes to poop just after the water is changed! Now, he is trying a small water dish and a larger water pool..... It is an interesting animal who needs a fairly large tank or reptarium as smaller lizards go..... Any animal you get is going to require a fair amount of upkeep: examine your lifestyle and what you are prepared to do. Research the various species and ask, ask, ask! What one person might think of as a lot of work might be nothing to you, and vice-versa. For example, our cats probably require the most upkeep - but I find the fish the hardest to maintain! Friends have the most amazing aquariums set up (a whole room full!) but wonder how we manage the cats....

k well, I have no problem with my water dragons and I would never compare them to an iguana any day, but you know what, I see that no matter what anyone says, someone else has the right answer. The question was an easy lizard, well I answered it based on my personal experience with now adult water dragons, thats it. These belong to me and I take care of them, not my kids or someone I know. But any lizard is going to be some work, hell if you want no work to be involved don`t get one. With a routine and proper care a person can be rewarded with a great pet.
