I have a lovable staffy and she loves to go for walks in the huge park near our building, mainly because she loves to socialize with other dogs. The problem is that because of her breed, many people go into a state of panic when they see her and grab their dogs to protect them. My Puppy, Sexy, will stop dead in her tracks when she sees another dog and bar heself to the ground. For many people, this may look like a sign of agression, but i am 100% sure it is not. She seems to do it in an attempt to meet every dog who passes. It is bad for both of us because people think she is badly trained and they are afraid of her. Any suggestions???

If she is going to ground (if I read your post correctly) it is a sign of submission and welcome - not aggression...... Just remember that there are a lot of ignorant people out there - don't take it as an insult to you or your dog.....

You know, I always wondered why when Molly and I would be walking along the wood lot trail and come across someone else and their dogs - she would stop and lay down. Thanks for the info - makes sense now!

I realize that it is a sign of submission, my dog, Sexy is very social, she just has to say hi to evry dog that walks by. Should i be discouraging her from doing this? i'd also like to add that she is not spayed yet.

also when a dog lowers its front end means lets play! So your dog is inviting others to play!

Try to watch how the dogs interact when you are at the dog park. Keep in mind dogs are not verbal (like people) they communicate with body language. Many times a simple twitch of an ear can be enough to change the dynamic of the situation. Licking at another dogs jowls is a sign of submission as well. Also, many people think that mounting (humping) is a dominant behaviour. When in fact, for most dogs (when in a social atmosphere with otehr well socialized dogs) is a signal to initiate play. Like saying "I really like you, lets play" You will quite often see a dog mount and hump a bit, then jump off runn arround, come back and play bow to the dog. If they dont respont, they do it again. Its kinda funny! (of course mounting can be sexual and dominant behaviours as well)

This is why I love this site so many smart people, so much to lean. I love what you said odindog about liking the jowels!! Pheonix is in love with my parents dog, and she constantly licks his jowels. And Teagen who is in love with Phee constantly licks her jowels. You can totally tell the hierachy. Phee isn't very submissive with new dogs, she tenses up, becomes really rigid. I've been told to make her sit and concentrate on me and not the other dog. Others have told me to ask the other owners if I can pet their dogs with Phee near by? Any thoughts?
