Hello all, a good friend of mine (Victoria BC) is considering finding a new home for his two male chinchillas. They are standard gray I believe and are brothers about a year old; very healthy and very cute.

He's made a beautiful wooden cage for them that goes with the guys.

He works a lot of night shifts and just feels that he doesn't have the time to spend with them that they deserve.

I'd gladly take them off his hands but I already have one chinchilla that I'm devoted to and just don't have the room to add anymore.

If anyone is interested in giving these guys a 'great' home, then please contact me asap. Thanks.

Please be very careful re-homing these guys. There are a few backyard breeders in the victoria area that troll for free chins... I have had experience with them.

Thanks for the heads up. I kind of figured that I might be contacted by some who plan to use the chillas for breeding purposes and so I'm being as careful as I possibly can.

Speaking of chillas... my guy Pip seems to have a thin strip of fur missing from the base of his tail and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this.

I know it's not from lack of attention b/c he's probably 'the' most spoiled chilla around. There's not a single day that goes by that he isn't let out of his mini mansion to roam around; 5 hours average per day he gets out to socialize with the family.

I just noticed the missing fur about a week ago. The only thing different lately that I can think of is that I've changed his shavings.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi, Pepe
My greyhound has a patch missing too just from over licking! Yes my dog is a butt- aholic LOL!!!
Try putting bitter spray on it and see if that works also note he might change to a different spot....

With my guys... I have one who has patches on his sides from his wheel... he goes like a maniac & ends up rubbing it on hie wheel, could he has got it caught in the wheel??? I have 2 of my own and am fostering 2 as well! It could very well be grooming but normally that would be feet not thier tails. Is the spot clean & normal colour? I would monitor him to see if it changes or if you notice grooming. He could just be lonely for other chin contact! Let me know how it goes with your friend, and your guy.

Good Luck

Pip is an 'only child' and he's two and a half years old.

He's extremely spoiled, meaning he lives in my living room in a lovely hand built wooden cage with lots of toys including a wheel.

At about 4:30 pm daily he gets let out and has the run of the place until I head upstairs to bed to either read or sleep. He gets loads of attention from the whole family so I don't think he's bored. When we go out in the evenings I even pay my son (10) or my daughter (13) two dollars an hour to babysit him. I'm probably crazy for doing this but he's just so used to being out for long periods of time.

Granted, we're not chinchillas so maybe he is lonely for a furry friend?

The piece missing from his tail starts at the base and forms a perfect straight line about and inch and a half long and about an eighth of an inch wide. His skin is exposed and it looks clean and white with no red patches; a perfect wax job. Lol.

I noticed on the new shavings that I bought him that it didn't say 'kiln dried' so I went out about bought that expensive Care Fresh stuff yesterday and put it in his cleaned cage. We'll see if that makes a difference.

It just looks so weird seeing him with a strip missing from his tail b/c he looked so perfect before and now he looks like he's, well not a perfect little fur ball. I want to help him with whatever's bugging him b/c it bugs me too.

Also, I'm thinking of sending away for one of those flying saucer wheels and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. It looks like a great wheel to me and am very close to ordering it from Ontario. Although if anyone is selling them in BC, that would be even better considering the shipping charges.

To the poster who mentioned "bitter spray" I'll keep that in mind. Is it possible Pip might have fungus?

The flying saucers are great... One of my guys has one, I picked it up used, a complete fluke..... There is currently no one in Canada who distributes them, so the only way to get them is to order them from the states.

If I had access to unlimited funds I would have the flying saucer wheel for every rodent(16) I have in my home. They are louder than normal wheels but I think that has more to due with the momentum, the bearings are quite quiet.

I'll pm you about the fungus...

are these two boys still available? I have been looking for my daughter who is 13. We have owned a chin in the past who unfortunately passed away for unknown reasons. We live near Victoria and would be happy to come by and meet your friend and his chins.

Thank you, Candice

If they aren't let me know, I have friends who are involved with Chinchilla rescue, and I know they currently have a few available for adoption.

They are in Victoria also.
