The "Yorkie", despite its pretty looks and delicate nature, has a working class background, and was once a ratter in the Yorkshire area of England.
Because of its lowly roots, the Yorkshire Terrier was at one point derided by wealthier dog lovers. The innate beauty of this breed prevailed, however, and before long the Yorkshire Terrier made appearances in glamorous show rings and on the laps of the wealthy.
In the late nineteenth century, the breed was of varied size, many weighing as much as fourteen pounds. Public preference for the smaller terriers led breeders to breed a smaller Yorkie with a longer coat. |
