 AUSTRALIAN SHEPARD DESCRIPTION
Australian Shepards are athletic dogs of medium build. They are intelligent and responsive with medium-length coats of straight to wavy fur.

 AUSTRALIAN SHEPARD HISTORY
The Australian Shepard is not really an Australian breed. One theory of this breed's origin is that it came to Australia with Basque settlers that moved to Australia from Europe in the 1800s. These settlers brought their sheep and sheepdogs with them and eventually, the breed was introduced to North America and named the Australian Shepard.

These dogs were mostly unknown until the 1950s when they became popular performing dogs in rodeos and movies of the time.

 AUSTRALIAN SHEPARD TEMPERMENT
Australian Shepards are loyal and protective animals that require regular vigorous exercise. With proper training and exercise, these dogs are happy, loyal companions, though without can become bored and antisocial.

Because of their herding background, they may try to herd nearby animals and small children.

 AUSTRALIAN SHEPARD HEALTH CONCERNS
Major concerns: cataract, CEA

Minor concerns: CHD, nasal solar dermatitis, Pelger – Huet syndrome, iris coloboma

Occasionally seen: lumbar sacral syndrome, epilepsy, PRA, vWD, distichiasis, PDA, PPM

Suggested tests: hip, eye

Note: This breed is often sensitive to ivermectin; however, the dosage for heartworm preventive is considered safe. Merle-to-merle breedings result in some offspring that are homozygous merle, which is detrimental to health, commonly resulting in deafness and blindness. Natural bobtail-to-natural bobtail breedings can result in some offspring with serious spinal defects.
