English Setters are athletic and rambunctious when playing outdoors, yet friendly and easy-going at home. This is one of the characteristics that has made them a favourite family pet.
They are larger dogs than many city or apartment-dwellers will be able to manage and thrive best in suburban and rural areas.
ENGLISH SETTER HISTORY
The English Setter dates back to the 14th century and is one of the original "setters" that were bred to assist hunters in stalking birds and other waterfowl. They received their name from their characterstic of pointing out or "setting" a fallen bird.
The English Setters are actually a family of two similar dogs -- the show variety, often known as the Laverack and the field variety, known as the Llewellin. Both types have enjoyed considerable popularity as pets in North America.
ENGLISH SETTER TEMPERMENT
Like many dogs bred to run long and hard, an English Setter that doesn't get enough exercise can be a handful in the home. Provided they are worked hard every day, they are friendly and affectionate pets.
These dogs are friendly and socialble with children, strangers and other dogs.
